According to a report from Ice Universe, Chinese smartphone manufacturer Oppo is planning to introduce its own smartphone chipset in 2024.

The company is said to have hired thousands of people to work on the project, although further details are currently scarce.

It is likely that the chip will be based on ARM architecture, using Cortex CPUs and Mali GPUs, with Oppo's own MariSilicon designs for things like the ISP and wireless connectivity.

It is not yet clear who Oppo will partner with for the project, or whether the company will attempt a ground-up design. The introduction of Oppo's own chipset could potentially lead to a trend of custom chipsets from smartphone manufacturers.
